This concept of TV licenses is foreign for us North Americans. Here, you don’t pay your cable bill your cable is disconnected.  To be prosecuted for wanting to watch TV is absurd. Paying, or wanting to pay, for the “privilege” of watching the (mind-control) state and corporate  programing is beyond absurd. Criminalizing an entire nation for wanting to watch TV is absurd. Lou.

TV licensing offences are now responsible for more than a tenth of all criminal prosecutions in the UK.

More than 180,000 people – almost 3,500 a week – appeared in front of magistrates last year after being accused of watching TV without paying the £145.50 fee.

Magistrates handled a total of 1.48m cases last year, which means that a record 12 per cent of court cases now involve TV licensing, according to City A.M.

Women are disproportionately affected by the fee, which funds the BBC, with two thirds of cases brought against females.

Last night, the TV Licensing authority said the gender imbalance was because women are more likely to be at home when the inspectors call.

In total, 155,000 people were convicted for not paying the fee in 2012, which can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. Those who refuse to pay can face jail.20 Mar 2012

A year earlier, in 2011, 140,000 people were convicted of avoiding the licence fee and magistrates called for the failure to get a television license to be decriminalised.

The Ministry of Justice figures were published following a parliamentary question from Lord Laird.
